Transforming a Bunnlevel, NC Backyard: Custom Drainage, Stone, and Bermuda Sod Installation

Day 1: Solving Yard Drainage Issues with Hand-Trenched Piping
Every great landscape starts with a solid foundation, which means getting rid of standing water. On Wednesday afternoon, our on-site crew got to work hand-trenching new drainage lines in the backyard.
To ensure maximum efficiency without disrupting the surrounding yard, we dug a series of trenches 12 inches deep and 70 linear feet long. We then installed high-quality perforated drainage pipes. This design allows excess water to escape into the soil naturally to keep the grass hydrated, rather than pooling on the surface. To handle heavy North Carolina downpours, we capped the system with a pop-up emitter drain at the end of the line, providing a safe outlet for severe overflow.
Day 2: Adding Carolina Gold Stone and Low-Maintenance Shrubs
On Thursday morning, we shifted our focus to the hardscaping and plant features. To complement the homeowner’s existing color palette, we sourced and delivered beautiful Carolina Gold stone from a local quarry.
To keep the decorative stone crisp, clean, and perfectly contained, we installed durable black steel landscape edging. Inside the new stone beds, we planted four varieties of hardy, low-maintenance shrubs perfect for the Bunnlevel climate:
- Bowling Ball Arborvitae (Evergreen structure)
- Bluebill Hydrangea (Vibrant seasonal color)
- Nandina (Year-round visual interest)
- North Pole Arborvitae (Elegant vertical accent)
These choices give the customer maximum curb appeal with minimal upkeep.
Day 3: Premium Tifway Bermuda Sod Installation
We wrapped up the project on Friday with a complete lawn replacement. First, we prepped the backyard with a nutrient-rich, composted topsoil mix to give the new roots the perfect growing environment.
At the customer's request, we installed 10 pallets of pre-fertilized Hybrid 419 Tifway Bermuda sod. We proudly sourced this premium turf grass from a local, sustainable, and ethical small-town farm. To ensure excellent root-to-soil contact and a perfectly level lawn, we finished the job by rolling the fresh sod and giving it a deep, thorough watering.
