Steps for Soil Preparation and Sod Installation
- Kill your existing grass with Roundup and rake away the dead debris.
- Add 1-2 inches of humus compost to your existing soil. This adds natural nutrients and helps retain moisture
- Apply a starter fertilizer such as a 18-24-12 mix and Dolomitic Lime
- The soil level should be 3/4″ – 1″ below the level of your driveway or sidewalk
- If the soil is fluffy or hot, moisten it lightly to compact it
- Border all gardens and walkways with sod and then start staggering the seams along a straight line. If sloped, place rolls across the slope and avoid leaving small pieces at the edges as they will dry quickly and not retain much moisture
- Water sod to a depth of 3-4 inches until rooted down and then water as needed
